The Ambon gudgeon (Butis amboinensis) is a quietly fascinating fish that most hobbyists encounter by accident. It turns up occasionally as an unintentional export mixed in with other brackish species. Its range sweeps across an enormous stretch of the Indo-West Pacific, from the Philippines and Indonesia out through Micronesia and the Solomon Islands to Fiji and New Caledonia, where it haunts coastal streams, estuaries, and mangrove creeks over muddy or leaf-littered bottoms. What immediately sets it apart from most aquarium fish is its habit of pressing against solid surfaces at any angle, horizontal, vertical, or completely inverted, and actively swimming upside-down. This isn't distress behavior; it's how the species naturally positions itself beneath submerged wood to ambush prey. Like other members of the genus Butis, it carries cryptic, olive-toned patterning and can shift its coloration lighter or darker to better disappear into its surroundings. It belongs to the sleeper family Eleotridae, which means it lacks the fused pelvic fins that define true gobies. In the aquarium it can work well for a beginner willing to respect its limitations. It must be kept as a solitary specimen, since it's aggressive toward similar-shaped fish and will readily eat anything small enough to swallow. Larger brackish tankmates like monos or archerfish are sensible companions.
