The Brunei Beauty (Betta macrostoma) is one of the most sought-after fish in the Betta genus, native to the shallow streams and quiet pools of Borneo where it occupies everything from near-stagnant clay-bottomed pools to fast-flowing waterfall tributaries. Males are visually arresting, carrying deep red coloration on the body and opercle along with a distinctive dorsal-fin ocellus, while the body shape reflects its membership in the unimaculata complex. Long and slender with a broad, blunt head and a noticeably large mouth. That mouth serves a purpose: this species is a paternal mouthbrooder, with the male incubating eggs for anywhere from two to five weeks before releasing fully formed, free-swimming fry. In the aquarium it is quiet and somewhat shy, and it does not belong in a typical community setup. Larger or more assertive tankmates will stress it, and males kept together will fight persistently. A dedicated pair tank is really the right approach. Breeding is one of the more challenging and rewarding projects in the freshwater hobby, requiring careful partner selection, a tight-fitting lid to protect the labyrinth organ development of fry, and a calm environment so males do not abandon their broods. This is genuinely a species for experienced keepers who can commit the time and setup it deserves.
