The Akar Betta (Betta akarensis) is a medium-sized wild betta from the island of Borneo, where it inhabits slow-moving and stagnant sections of peat swamp forest streams, often buried among leaf litter beneath overhanging vegetation. It lends its name to an entire species group within the genus Betta, which itself is the most diverse genus in the family Osphronemidae, with close to 70 recognized members. Like all anabantoids, it carries a labyrinth organ that allows it to breathe atmospheric air directly, an adaptation that serves it well in the oxygen-depleted, acidic waters it naturally calls home. In terms of appearance, look for the vivid yellow eye and an uninterrupted second stripe on the opercle as key identifying features. Behaviorally, this is not a fish for a bustling community tank. It does best either alone, in a species-only setup, or alongside very calm, small companions, with plenty of cover and broken sightlines to reduce tension. Groups can be kept together with care, but some squabbling is normal. One of the more interesting aspects of this species is its reproductive strategy: it is a paternal mouthbrooder in which the female takes the lead in courtship, and the male incubates the eggs and fry in his mouth for up to three weeks. An intermediate-level species that suits dedicated keepers willing to tailor a setup around its specific needs.
