Found only in the shallow, leaf-littered forest streams of the Sebuku basin in East Kalimantan, Borneo, Betta albimarginata is a small but fascinating representative of a genus with nearly 70 recognized species. Adults rarely exceed an inch and a half, and they carry a distinctive color pattern that sets them apart from close relatives: fins banded in white at the tip, a broad dark submarginal stripe, and a plain red inner section, with displaying males showing a rich brick-red body tone and an orange blush on the cheek. Like all labyrinth fish, this species can breathe atmospheric air directly, which makes sense given its origins in very shallow, slow-moving water. In the aquarium, its peaceful temperament is genuine, but that same gentle nature makes it a poor fit for busy community tanks where boisterous or larger tankmates will stress it out. It does best in a quiet setup with similarly-sized, calm companions, or simply kept as a species on its own. The breeding behavior is genuinely rewarding to witness. The male incubates a small clutch of eggs in his mouth for up to three weeks, releasing fully formed fry afterward. A tight-fitting lid is essential during this period, as the developing fry require access to warm, humid air above the water surface. An intermediate-level species with a lot to offer patient keepers.
