Found in the shaded hill-streams of Thailand, Betta apollon is one of those species that reminds you just how different the wild betta world is from the flowing-fin varieties most people picture. In its natural habitat, it hides among roots, leaf litter, and aquatic plants in the shallow margins of forest streams, though some individuals are also found wedged between boulders in faster-moving water. The water there runs cool, clear, and extremely soft, almost colourless, which is an important clue for anyone planning to keep this fish. Like other members of the wild betta group, it is a facultative air-breather, meaning it can gulp air directly from the surface when dissolved oxygen is low, an adaptation that suits its sometimes sluggish, leaf-littered microhabitats. This is a small species, barely reaching two and a half inches at most, so it does not demand a huge footprint, but it does ask for clean, soft, acidic water and a densely furnished tank with plenty of cover. It is not a fish for beginners, maintaining the specific water chemistry it needs takes some experience, but for hobbyists who enjoy keeping wild bettas, Betta apollon is a genuinely rewarding challenge.
