Found only in the upper Kayan and Howong river drainages of east Borneo, Betta unimaculata is a large, slender-bodied labyrinth fish with a blunt head, iridescent scales on the gill covers, and a yellowish to brown body marked with transverse bars in the fins rather than vertical bars on the flanks. At three to five inches it runs noticeably bigger than the common betta most people know, and its long anal fin base gives it an elongated, almost pike-like silhouette. Unlike its famously combative relatives, this species is genuinely peaceful outside of spawning conditions, which makes it a rewarding fish for a keeper willing to give it the right setup. It does best in quiet company, small cyprinids and loaches from similar habitats work well, since bolder or more boisterous tankmates tend to intimidate it. What really sets this species apart for breeding enthusiasts is its reproductive behavior: the male is a paternal mouthbrooder, carrying fertilised eggs for ten to fourteen days before releasing free-swimming fry. Getting a compatible pair is easiest when one forms naturally from a group, as randomly paired fish can occasionally turn on each other. Like all anabantoids, it breathes atmospheric air using a labyrinth organ, so a tight-fitting lid is non-negotiable, especially when raising fry. A manageable species for a beginner willing to do a little homework.
