Greenthroat Betta

Found only on the Indonesian island of Bangka, this obscure wild betta, Betta chloropharynx, lives in shallow, heavily shaded forest pools carpeted with decomposing leaves. The water there is intensely acidic and tannin-stained, and the fish has adapted accordingly. Like all labyrinth fish, it can breathe atmospheric air directly, which helps it survive the low-oxygen conditions of its native habitat. It belongs to the waseri species group, a cluster of closely related bettas that share a clay-yellow base coloration with iridescent gold cheek scales in mature males. What sets this particular species apart is the distinctive throat patterning: the lighter markings form a shape resembling the Greek letter mu, which is the most reliable field mark for separating it from its cousins. Adults stay small, rarely exceeding a couple of inches, and that petite size combined with a fairly gentle disposition means it is easily outcompeted or stressed by boisterous tankmates. Peaceful nano species are the safest companions if you want to keep it in a community, though a species-only setup is perfectly fine too. Breeding is genuinely fascinating: this is a paternal mouthbrooder, and unusually for the genus, brooding males will continue to accept food throughout the incubation period. Getting the fry through their earliest weeks requires warm, humid air above the waterline, so a tightly sealed lid is essential.
