Found only in the peat swamp forests around Ayer Hitam in Johor, Malaysia, Betta persephone is one of the smaller and more obscure members of the coccina species group. A cluster of closely related dwarf bettas that mostly run red or black. This species sits firmly in the dark camp: the body is a deep blackish tone, while the median fins carry a diffuse wash of light green iridescence and the pelvic fins are tipped with white filaments. It is a tiny fish, and easy to overlook in a densely planted setup, which is precisely where it belongs. The natural environment is extreme by most fishkeeping standards, blackwater peat swamps with pH levels that would alarm the average community keeper, and this species genuinely needs those conditions to thrive long-term. That alone puts it in the advanced category. Like all labyrinth fish, it breathes atmospheric air, so a humid, tightly sealed surface above the water is important, especially when raising fry. Despite the fearsome reputation of the Betta genus, this species is generally peaceful and can be kept in a species group if cover is generous. It builds bubble nests, produces small spawns typically under twenty eggs, and both parents usually participate in guarding the nest. A rewarding fish for the dedicated keeper, but not one to grab on impulse.
