The Java fightingfish (Betta picta) is the namesake of the Betta picta species complex, a group of closely related bettas sharing rounded unpaired fins, distinctive facial striping, and iridescent opercle scales. In this species those scales flash yellow-gold, a useful identification point. Males also show a narrow bluish band along the outer edges of the anal and caudal fins, along with faint barring in the dorsal fin. Native to Indonesia, this small fish inhabits the kind of varied environments the genus Osphronemidae is known for, from sluggish lowland ditches to cleaner hill streams. Like all anabantoids it carries a labyrinth organ that lets it breathe atmospheric air directly, which helps it cope with low-oxygen conditions in the wild. Despite the common name, this species sits toward the peaceful end of the betta spectrum. It can be kept as a pair or small group, though tankmates should be chosen carefully. Very calm, similarly sized fish are the safer option, and many keepers find it happiest on its own. Where it gets genuinely interesting is reproduction: males are paternal mouthbrooders, incubating fertilized eggs in the mouth for around ten days before releasing free-swimming fry that are large enough to take small live foods right away. The spawning process itself is an elaborate back-and-forth between the pair, worth watching if you get the chance.
