About

Found in the leaf litter of Indonesian forest streams and swamp forests, this small mouthbrooding betta, Betta dimidiata, is frequently mixed up with its close relative B. krataios in the trade. The two are easier to tell apart than you might think: B. dimidiata carries a distinctive spade-shaped caudal fin rather than a rounded one, along with reddish-brown body coloration, reddish fins, and gold iridescent scales on the operculum. Males develop notably extended pelvic and unpaired fins, and both sexes show broad vertical dark bars along the flanks and a characteristic chin bar. Like all anabantoids, it can breathe atmospheric air directly, an adaptation that suits its origins in low-oxygen swamp environments. Despite being listed as beginner-friendly in terms of basic care, this is not a fish you drop into a busy community setup. Its small size and gentle disposition leave it easily outcompeted by boisterous tankmates, so it does best either alone, in a bonded pair, or with very calm, similarly-sized companions. The breeding behavior is genuinely fascinating: after an embrace-style spawning typical of the family, the male incubates the eggs in his mouth for one to two weeks, eventually releasing free-swimming fry large enough to take small live foods right away.
