Black Imbellis

Found across the rice paddies, roadside ditches, and densely vegetated pond margins of Thailand and Cambodia, Betta siamorientalis is a small, peaceful member of the splendens group that spent years hiding in plain sight. It was long treated as a dark color form of B. imbellis, known informally as 'black imbellis,' and has also been mixed up with B. splendens due to similar reddish opercular markings. DNA work in 2012 confirmed it as a species in its own right. The body is dark brown to near-black, with the male's opercle carrying two parallel reddish bars, and the caudal fin edged with a red crescent band and a thin black border. Details that reward a close look. Like all anabantoids, it breathes atmospheric air using a labyrinth organ, which makes it tolerant of low-oxygen conditions in the wild. In the aquarium it needs dense planting and broken sightlines; while multiple males can sometimes coexist with enough cover, it does poorly with boisterous or significantly larger tankmates that will stress or outcompete it. Breeding follows the classic bubble-nest pattern, with the male taking sole charge of nest care after spawning. A tight-fitting lid is important when raising fry, as the developing labyrinth organ requires access to warm, humid air above the waterline.
