Native to the shaded swamp forests of Pulau Bintan in Indonesia's Riau Archipelago, Betta miniopinna is a small member of the B. coccina species group. A cluster of closely related miniature bettas that make their homes in acidic, tannin-stained forest peat swamps. While most of its cousins sport red bodies, this species stands out with a darkish, almost blackish body overlaid with a diffuse green iridescence across the median fins. The real flash of color comes from the pelvic fins, which are bright red with white filamentous tips. A distinctive detail that helps separate it from the similar B. persephone. Like all anabantoids, it can breathe atmospheric air directly through its labyrinth organ, which is particularly well-suited to the low-oxygen waters it inhabits in the wild. Despite being listed as beginner-friendly, it is not a good fit for a general community tank. Its best companions, if any, are very calm, similarly sized species from comparable habitats. Kept in a well-planted, heavily covered setup, a group can coexist peacefully. Breeding follows the typical bubble-nesting pattern of the group, with both parents often sharing broodcare duties and fry that are relatively straightforward to raise on small live foods.
