The Black Lizard Loach (Balitoropsis zollingeri) is a fascinating riverine fish from the fast-flowing streams of the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins, the Malay Peninsula, and parts of Indonesia. Its body is built for turbulent water. The paired fins splay out horizontally, the belly is flattened, and the whole underside works together as a suction cup, letting the fish grip rocky surfaces against strong currents. Rather than swimming freely, it tends to crawl and hop across the substrate in short bursts, which is exactly what earned this group the 'lizard loach' nickname. The mostly dark caudal fin, with just a touch of white banding at the tip of the upper lobe, is one useful feature for telling this species apart from its close relative. In the wild it lives in groups and feeds on insect larvae, and this social tendency carries into aquarium life. Keep six or more and you'll see far bolder, more natural behavior than from a lone specimen. It is generally peaceful, though it does best with tankmates from similar high-energy environments. No breeding has been documented in captivity. Listed as beginner-suitable, it's an accessible choice for anyone willing to set up the brisk water flow and rocky hardscape it genuinely needs to thrive.
