The Western Ghat loach (Bhavania australis) is a small hillstream specialist from the fast-moving, clear rivers of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala in India's Western Ghats. A region with exceptionally high aquatic biodiversity. Like other members of the Balitoridae family, this fish is built specifically for life in heavy current: the body and head are flattened top-to-bottom, and the paired fins splay out horizontally to form a powerful suction structure that locks the fish onto rocks and substrate. You won't see it swimming freely in midwater very often. It tends to crawl and hop across surfaces in a way that's quite different from most loaches and endlessly entertaining to watch. The species is genuinely rare in the international hobby, though it has a dedicated following among hobbyists in India. It's peaceful toward other fish, but its preference for fast, well-oxygenated, cool water does narrow down the list of practical tankmates. Fish from similar habitats, Barilius, Garra, Devario, hillstream gobies, and nemacheilid loaches, tend to be the best matches. In the wild it lives in loose groups, so keeping six or more together brings out much more natural, confident behavior. Worth noting: this species is listed as endangered in its native range, which adds some weight to responsible keeping.
