The Mediterranean killifish (Aphanius fasciatus) is a small but endlessly active toothcarp native to coastal lagoons, river mouths, ditches, and shallow brackish to hypersaline waters across the Mediterranean basin. From southern France and the Adriatic coast down through North Africa as far east as Egypt. It tolerates an impressively wide range of salinities and water conditions in the wild, yet despite that adaptability it can be a challenge to keep well in captivity, so it rewards keepers who do their homework rather than newcomers looking for an easygoing addition to a community setup. Its particular water and social needs make it a poor fit alongside other species, and most experienced keepers recommend running it as a single-species group, ideally with two or three females for every male. Males become more vividly colored when dominant and actively defend loose territories during the spring-to-autumn spawning period. Females deposit eggs continuously across this window, attaching them to algae or vegetation, and adults will readily consume both eggs and fry if given the chance, so daily monitoring is essential. You are unlikely to find this fish at a local shop. Specialist breeders and killifish associations are your best route. Given that the species faces real pressure from habitat loss and invasive introductions in the wild, captive breeding programs carry genuine conservation value, which makes the extra effort feel worthwhile.
