The Spanish toothcarp (Aphanius iberus) is a small but historically significant fish from the Mediterranean coastline of Spain, where it inhabits lagoons, salt marshes, estuaries, and slow-moving freshwaters. One of its most remarkable traits is its tolerance for a huge range of salinities, from pure freshwater all the way up to conditions saltier than the sea, which reflects the unpredictable coastal environments it evolved in. Males display vertical barring along their flanks and intensify in color when competing for territory or courting females, while females are more subtly patterned with small dark markings. The species has declined sharply across its native range due to habitat loss and competition from introduced mosquitofish, and collection from the wild is now prohibited.
