Found along the rocky shorelines and transitional zones of Lake Malawi, Pseudotropheus aurora is a compact mbuna that lives right where rock meets sand. A habitat detail that shapes its behavior in the aquarium as much as in the wild. In nature it concentrates at shallow depths, where dominant males stake out territories on the upper surfaces of larger rocks, while some lower-ranking males take the less glamorous approach of digging scrape nests at the base of rocks in the sand. Females and younger fish tend to move in loose aggregations. That social complexity translates directly to the tank: males are territorial and aggressive, and like most mbuna they can be relentless toward rivals or similar-looking tankmates. A species-appropriate setup with plenty of rockwork for line-of-sight breaks is essential. This is not a fish for a peaceful community, but in a properly arranged Malawi biotope or mixed mbuna display with experienced management, it does well. The intermediate care rating is fair. The species is reasonably hardy and adapts to aquarium life without too much fuss, but its aggression demands thoughtful stocking decisions. With good conditions it can live a solid decade, making it a long-term commitment worth thinking through before purchase.
