The Eastern Happy (Astatotilapia calliptera) is a fascinating cichlid that sits outside the typical Malawi haplochromine mold in some interesting ways. Unlike many of its rift lake relatives that are tightly specialized, this species is a genuine opportunist in the wild. Found across Lakes Malawi, Chiuta, and Chilwa as well as the lower Zambezi, Buzi, Pungwe, and Save river systems. That wide range tells you something: this fish is adaptable. In nature it gravitates toward shallow, vegetated margins, picking off invertebrates, algae, plant material, small fish, and plankton with equal enthusiasm, which makes feeding it in captivity pretty straightforward for an intermediate keeper. Males develop the rich iridescent patterning typical of the genus, though the species won't win any awards for being the flashiest fish in an African cichlid community. Reproduction follows the maternal mouthbrooding strategy common to the group. Females collect and incubate fertilized eggs in the mouth, with no pair bond involved. That agamous breeding behavior means males can be persistently pushy toward females, so keeping multiple females per male and providing ample cover is smart practice. Given the cichlid temperament and the preferred alkaline water, this species pairs well with other Malawi community setups, though it will need enough room to establish territories comfortably.
