Slender Tail Hap
Buccochromis lepturus
A rarely seen Lake Malawi predator that hunts juvenile cichlids on sandy flats.

About
The Slender Tail Hap (Buccochromis lepturus) is one of those Lake Malawi cichlids that most hobbyists know by reputation long before they ever see one for sale. Endemic to Lake Malawi, juveniles inhabit the shallows close to shore, while adults push out into deeper, more open water. A pelagic lifestyle that makes them genuinely difficult to collect and export, which explains both their scarcity in the trade and their price when they do show up. In the wild, this species hunts juvenile cichlids across sandy substrate, and that predatory instinct carries straight into the aquarium. Anything small enough to swallow will be treated as a meal, so tankmate selection matters. That said, it is not reflexively aggressive toward fish it cannot eat. Most Lake Malawi species above roughly six inches are generally left alone, and conspecifics tend to tolerate each other reasonably well when given adequate space. Mbuna are an exception worth noting and are best avoided as tankmates. This is a big fish that needs a large, well-filtered tank and meaty foods to stay healthy long-term, making it a better fit for intermediate keepers with some Malawi experience already under their belt. Breeding has happened in the hobby, it is a maternal mouthbrooder, but documented accounts are thin.
