The Stripeback Hap (Buccochromis nototaenia) is one of those Lake Malawi cichlids that most hobbyists never get a chance to keep simply because it barely appears in the trade. Collecting it is genuinely difficult. At any hint of disturbance it bolts into deeper water, making net capture a real challenge. In the lake itself, it patrols sandy offshore flats at moderate depths, actively chasing down juvenile cichlids as its primary food source. That hunting lifestyle is the defining trait to keep in mind when planning a tank for this fish. Anything small enough to swallow is a meal, full stop. That said, it holds its own reasonably well in a mixed Malawi community as long as tankmates are large enough not to register as prey. Most haps and peacocks over six inches or so are generally fine. Mbuna tend to be a poor pairing. Toward its own kind it is surprisingly tolerant, particularly when given adequate space. Breeding has apparently not been documented in captivity yet, though like its close relatives it is a maternal mouthbrooder. Given its size potential and active open-water habits, a spacious tank matters more than technical water chemistry demands, and the care level is considered manageable even for those newer to large cichlids.
