The peacock cichlid (Aulonocara nyassae) carries one of the more intriguing stories in the hobby. This is technically the species from which the entire Aulonocara genus takes its common name, yet the original specimen described by scientists has never been officially recorded again since. What we know from that holotype places it in Lake Malawi, where it was observed moving over sandy substrate near rocky areas, likely using those rocks as spawning territory rather than permanent habitat. Like other members of this genus, it is a sand-sifter by nature, hunting down small invertebrates buried just beneath the surface. The broader Aulonocara group is well-represented in the hobby, and care principles carry over: these are cichlids that appreciate open sandy areas to forage, stable alkaline water that mirrors their rift lake origins, and a diet with plenty of meaty content to keep them in good condition. Males in the genus tend to be the colorful showstoppers while females are more subdued, and males can be territorial with one another, so tank composition matters. Intermediate-level keepers who have some experience with African rift cichlids will find this group rewarding and manageable.
