The Burmese frogmouth catfish (Chaca burmensis) is one of those fish that looks less like a living animal and more like a waterlogged piece of bark someone dropped into the tank. Native to Myanmar, it belongs to a small family of ambush predators that have taken camouflage and stillness to an extreme. The body is flattened and heavily textured, with a comically oversized mouth that gives the whole group their common name. In the wild, these fish sit motionless on the substrate, often for hours, waiting for smaller fish or invertebrates to wander within range before lunging with surprising speed. That hunting strategy is the main thing to plan around in an aquarium setting. Any tankmate small enough to fit in that mouth will eventually disappear, usually overnight. Despite that predatory nature, Chaca burmensis is actually quite undemanding in terms of water conditions and tolerates a reasonable range of parameters, which is why the care level often surprises people. The bigger challenge is diet: getting them onto dead or frozen foods takes patience, as they strongly prefer live prey. Given enough cover, a species-only setup, and a reliable source of appropriate food, these oddball catfish are genuinely long-lived and rewarding to keep.
