The Chel Snakehead (Channa amphibeus) is a substantial predatory fish native to large river systems in India and Bhutan, a region where it has sometimes been confused with the closely related Channa barca. Adults can reach impressive lengths, and this species shares the snakehead family's defining trait of obligate air-breathing, meaning it must have access to the water surface to breathe atmospheric air directly. That adaptation lets snakeheads survive in low-oxygen environments that would be lethal to most fish, and it's part of what makes the group so resilient. In the aquarium, the Chel Snakehead is considered manageable even for less experienced keepers willing to commit to the space and feeding demands a large carnivore requires. It will need a very large tank to live comfortably long-term, and its diet should consist of meaty foods appropriate to its size. Despite the beginner-friendly care rating, the sheer scale of this fish means it's really a species for dedicated hobbyists who have planned for the commitment. With proper conditions, a Chel Snakehead can live well over a decade, making it a long-term resident rather than a casual addition.
