The golden cobra snakehead (Channa aurantimaculata) is one of the more visually arresting members of a family already known for dramatic looks. The upper body runs dark brown to near-black, broken up by seven or eight large, irregular orange blotches that give the fish its common name. The pectoral fins add to the pattern with a dark basal blotch and broad banding. Native to northeastern India, this species belongs to a group of Channa centered around the Brahmaputra drainage and surrounding hill streams. Like all snakeheads, it breathes atmospheric air using paired suprabranchial chambers. You will regularly see it rising to gulp air at the surface, and it can tolerate surprisingly low-oxygen conditions as a result. The wide temperature tolerance also reflects its origins in a region with significant seasonal variation. In the aquarium, this fish demands respect. It is intensely territorial toward its own kind, and aggression can erupt without warning even between individuals that have lived together for years. A species-only setup is the strongly recommended approach. It has been bred in captivity as a paternal mouthbrooder, though successful spawnings remain uncommon. The golden cobra is manageable for an intermediate keeper, but only one who goes in with realistic expectations about its temperament and long-term space needs.
