The barca snakehead (Channa barca) is one of the most sought-after and least accessible fish in the freshwater hobby. Scarce in the trade and priced to match. Native to large river systems in India and Bangladesh, it grows into a substantial predator capable of exceeding three feet in length. The body is covered in scattered black spots along the flanks and dorsal fin, and the pectoral fins carry a reddish base broken up by dark barring, giving it a pattern quite distinct from its close relatives. Like all members of the family Channidae, the large scales on the head give it that characteristic serpentine look that earned the group their common name. Channa barca also shares the family trait of obligate air-breathing, using paired suprabranchial chambers to gulp atmospheric oxygen. You will regularly see it surfacing in the aquarium. Temperament is a serious consideration here: this species is intensely territorial toward others of its kind, and aggression can erupt without warning even between individuals that have lived together for years. A species-only setup is essentially non-negotiable. Breeding has not been documented in captivity, though mouthbrooding is suspected based on close relatives. Despite being listed as beginner-level care, the size and aggression demands careful long-term planning before acquisition.
