Knight's Snakehead

Found in the streams and pools of the Khasi Hills in Meghalaya, northeastern India, this obscure snakehead, Channa pardalis, is named for its bold leopard-like patterning. A mosaic of dark spots and blotches that makes it one of the more visually interesting members of a genus already full of interesting fish. Like all snakeheads, it is an obligate air-breather, surfacing regularly to gulp atmospheric oxygen through a specialized suprabranchial organ, which means the tank must always have a gap between the water surface and a tight-fitting lid. That lid is non-negotiable. Channa are notorious escape artists. Being a true carnivore, it will take meaty foods readily, from feeder fish to earthworms and prawns, and can usually be trained onto frozen or prepared foods over time. Its temperament is typical for the genus: confident, territorial, and predatory toward anything small enough to be considered a meal. Tankmates need to be chosen carefully, and a species-only setup is often the simplest route. Reaching somewhere between three and ten inches depending on conditions, it fits into a reasonably sized aquarium and makes a rewarding long-term project for a keeper who appreciates personality over passivity.
