Allauad's Catfish (Clarias alluaudi) is a clariid native to the East African rift lake system, turning up across Lakes Victoria, Kyoga, Edward, Rukwa, and Tanganyika, as well as the Malagarasi and Rusizi river drainages. In the wild it gravitates toward muddy shorelines, papyrus swamps, rice paddy margins, and side channels. Basically anywhere slow, silty, and low in oxygen, which is where its facultative air-breathing ability really earns its keep. Like other members of the clariid family, it can gulp atmospheric air directly, allowing it to push through conditions that would stress most other fish. In the aquarium it grows to a decent size and demands a substantial tank with plenty of hiding spots and a secure lid. These fish are notorious escape artists when the mood strikes. Diet-wise it's an opportunist, naturally leaning toward insect larvae and small crustaceans but quite willing to take small fish when the chance arises, so tankmate selection deserves careful thought. It's not a fish for a community setup with anything bite-sized. There's even some evidence that wild populations undertake seasonal migrations, possibly for spawning, which hints at an active, roaming lifestyle. A solid choice for intermediate keepers who want a characterful, hardy predator with genuine natural history behind it.
