Cleaner Pipefish

Cleaner Pipefish (Doryrhamphus janssi) are one of the more behaviorally interesting members of the pipefish family, and what sets them apart is right there in the name. In the wild, pairs of these small fish establish cleaning stations on Indo-Pacific reefs, from the Gulf of Thailand across to the Solomon Islands and down to Queensland, where cardinalfish and damselfish line up to have parasites and debris removed. Watching that behavior play out in a home aquarium is genuinely compelling. They tuck themselves into caves, shaded overhangs, and crevices beneath plate corals, typically staying close to sponges, which seems to be a consistent habitat preference across their range. Like other syngnathids, reproduction here is handled by the male, who carries fertilized eggs in a brood pouch tucked under his tail until they hatch. In the aquarium, they do best when kept as a pair and given plenty of shelter to retreat into. Their care level is rated as beginner-friendly relative to other pipefish and seahorses, though they still need a well-established, thoughtfully stocked reef system. Their small size and peaceful nature make them a good fit alongside similarly calm, non-boisterous tankmates.
