The Dracula shrimp-goby (Stonogobiops dracula) is one of the more charming small gobies available to reef keepers, hailing from the sandy reef margins of the Seychelles and Maldives. In the wild, it occupies open patches of sand and rubble near coral reefs, where it lives in a close partnership with Alpheus randalli, a pistol shrimp. The arrangement is a classic mutualism: the shrimp, which has poor eyesight, excavates and maintains a shared burrow, while the goby stands watch at the entrance and signals danger with a flick of its tail. The two are rarely found apart. In the aquarium, this behavior is one of the main draws. Watching the pair work together is endlessly entertaining, and most keepers specifically seek out a matched shrimp to keep alongside the goby. Stonogobiops dracula hovers just above the burrow opening much of the day, darting back inside at any perceived threat, so a calm, low-traffic setup suits it well. It is a carnivore that picks small invertebrates from the water column and substrate. While not the hardiest fish for beginners, an intermediate keeper with a peaceful reef tank and a sandy substrate will find it a rewarding and long-lived resident.
