The yellowbanded pipefish (Dunckerocampus pessuliferus) is a slender, boldly banded species from the Indo-West Pacific that stands out from most of its relatives by being genuinely approachable for newer marine keepers. In the wild, adults gravitate toward muddy, deeper-water slopes where wave action is minimal, typically swimming close to the bottom near isolated coral heads scattered across sand and mud. They occasionally venture into shallow estuaries, but calm, undisturbed conditions seem to be their preference. Like other pipefishes, reproduction is handled by the male, who carries developing eggs in a brood pouch located beneath his tail. One of the more interesting things about this species is its role as an active cleaner. It picks parasites and debris off other fish in the wild, a behavior you may occasionally observe in the aquarium as well. Adults are usually seen alone or in bonded pairs, and that pairing tendency carries over into captivity. Providing a setup with a soft or sandy substrate and some low-profile coral structure will help this fish feel at home. Given its listed care level, it's one of the more forgiving pipefish options, though all members of this group still benefit from careful attention to diet and water quality.
