The sea pony (Hippocampus kuda), also widely known as the spotted seahorse or yellow seahorse, is one of the most recognizable seahorses in the hobby, and one of the few that genuinely earns a beginner-friendly label when properly set up. Native to a broad sweep of the Indo-Pacific, from southern Africa and the Red Sea all the way out to Hawaii and French Polynesia, these fish are remarkably adaptable in the wild. They turn up in seagrass beds, estuarine shallows, and along steep muddy reef slopes, and have even been recorded drifting well offshore attached to floating mats of Sargassum. Color can vary considerably, individuals may appear yellow, brown, or cream, with or without obvious spotting, so don't be thrown off if yours doesn't match a photo you've seen. Like all seahorses, males do the heavy lifting of reproduction, brooding eggs in an abdominal pouch until the young are born fully formed. They feed exclusively on live or frozen zooplankton and small crustaceans, which is the main care challenge; meeting that dietary need consistently is what separates keepers who succeed with them from those who don't. Captive-bred specimens are far easier to establish than wild-caught, and sourcing them from a reputable breeder is strongly recommended.
