The Blackspot Surgeonfish (Acanthurus nigrofuscus) is one of the more understated members of the tang family, wearing a muted brownish-lavender body offset by small orange-red spots near the base of the dorsal and anal fins and the characteristic scalpel-like spine at the tail base common to all surgeonfishes. In the wild, it ranges across an enormous stretch of the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea down to South Africa and east all the way to Hawaii, typically found grazing on filamentous algae over hard reef structures from shallow surge zones down to around 25 meters. What makes this species genuinely interesting is its social strategy: it sits near the bottom of the pecking order among surgeonfishes, and it compensates for that by feeding in large schools that simply overwhelm the territorial defenses of more dominant herbivores. Juveniles often mix with other species in loose aggregations. In the aquarium, this is a fish that appreciates company and open space to roam, and a healthy supply of algae-based foods is non-negotiable. It fits best with keepers who have some tang experience, as it shares the family's sensitivity to water quality and the potential for aggression when space is tight with other tangs.
