The Elegant Unicornfish (Naso elegans) is one of those fish that makes an immediate impression. Not just for its size, but for the sharp contrast of its orange peduncular spines against an otherwise muted, olive-gray body. The common names Lipstick Surgeonfish and Orangespine Unicornfish both nod to that same feature, and once you've seen one in person, the references make perfect sense. In the wild, this species ranges across the Indian Ocean from the Red Sea down to the coast of South Africa and east toward Bali, where it occupies reef flats, sheltered coastal zones, and rocky substrate, typically from shallow water down to around 30 meters. Groups and schools are common, especially out on more exposed oceanic reefs. Like most surgeonfish, it's a dedicated herbivore, spending most of its time grazing algae from hard surfaces. In the aquarium, that grazing behavior needs to be respected. It does best with generous, consistent feeding of plant-based foods. This is a fish that genuinely needs space to move, and it belongs in a serious, large-format reef or FOWLR setup. Its care rating reflects both its size at maturity and its need for high water quality and an experienced keeper who understands tang and unicornfish husbandry.
