The orchid dottyback (Pseudochromis fridmani) is one of those fish that stops you cold the moment you see it. A solid, vivid violet-purple from nose to tail, uniform and almost unreal in its color. In the wild it hugs the Red Sea's vertical reef walls and overhangs, ducking in and out of small crevices in the rock. That endemic range means every specimen you see in the trade has historically come from the Red Sea, though captive breeding is well established for this species, so tank-raised individuals are widely available and worth seeking out. In the aquarium, a newly introduced orchid dottyback will spend its first days tucked inside the rockwork, which is perfectly normal behavior. Give it time. Once it settles in and feels secure, it ventures out more freely and develops a confident, almost bossy personality. It will not hesitate to chase other small fish it perceives as competition, so tankmate selection matters. Avoid housing it with fish of similar shape or size, and be cautious in smaller systems where there is little room to escape. Overall it is a manageable fish for a hobbyist who has some saltwater experience and a well-structured reef with plenty of caves and ledges to call home.
