The Sohal Surgeonfish (Acanthurus sohal) is one of the most visually distinctive tangs in the hobby, dressed in crisp horizontal blue and white lines running the length of its body, with a vivid orange slash marking the caudal spine. A warning worth taking seriously. In the wild it's at home along the seaward faces of Red Sea and Persian Gulf reefs, where wave surge keeps the water well-oxygenated and algae growth is constant. It grazes heavily on filamentous green algae and Sargassum, which makes it genuinely useful in a system prone to nuisance algae, but its appetite for tank work comes with a serious catch: this fish is among the most territorially aggressive surgeonfish available to hobbyists. It will harass, intimidate, and outright attack tankmates it considers a threat, and almost any other fish in a similar body shape qualifies. The "beginner" care rating refers strictly to its hardiness and feeding, it eats readily and adapts well to aquarium life, but its temperament demands careful stocking decisions and a large, well-structured system with plenty of rockwork to break sightlines. This is not a community fish in the usual sense, and experienced reef keepers will tell you to plan your whole tank around it if you want one.
