The bluespine unicornfish (Naso unicornis) is one of those fish that genuinely turns heads, and not just because of that prominent bony horn projecting from its forehead. Adults develop a elongated rostral protrusion alongside a pair of sharp, vivid blue-edged spines flanking the tail. A combination that makes this species pretty unmistakable in the water. It's a large fish by any measure, and its range across the Indo-Pacific is equally expansive, from the Red Sea and East Africa all the way out to Hawaii and the Marquesas, north to southern Japan, and south to Lord Howe Island. In the wild, adults favor surge channels, reef moats, and exposed seaward reef faces where water movement is constant and strong. They're usually seen in small groups, picking at coarse brown algae like Sargassum. Though solitary individuals aren't uncommon. Juveniles tend to hang back in more sheltered bays and harbors before graduating to rougher reef environments as they grow. In the aquarium, this species needs serious space. We're talking a very large system with robust flow. The diet is manageable given its algae-focused feeding, but the sheer eventual size of this fish means it's really only practical for dedicated large-system keepers despite its otherwise forgiving nature.
