Achilles Tang

The Achilles tang (Acanthurus achilles) is one of the most visually arresting surgeonfish you can keep, built around a deep black body set off by a vivid orange-red teardrop patch on the caudal peduncle. The same area where its sharp, potentially venomous spine sits. In the wild, this species inhabits clear, wave-washed seaward reefs from the oceanic islands of Oceania across to Hawaii and the Pitcairn group, plus scattered locations like the Mariana Islands and the southern tip of Baja California. Out on the reef, Achilles tangs are typically found in loose groups, methodically cropping filamentous and small fleshy algae from the substrate. In captivity that grazing behavior continues, making good macroalgae growth and high-quality dried algae essential parts of the diet. The temperament is a bit of a split personality: generally relaxed toward unrelated species, but intensely territorial against other tangs or similarly shaped fish. A tank that is too small or too bare will produce a fish that paces restlessly, which is both a welfare concern and a stress indicator. This is a species that rewards experienced keepers who can offer genuinely large, well-oxygenated systems with plenty of open water and appropriate tankmates.
