The longnose butterflyfish (Forcipiger flavissimus) is immediately recognizable by its comically elongated snout, which makes up a significant portion of its body length and sets it apart from virtually every other butterfly in the trade. The body is vivid yellow with a dark upper head, a white lower face, and a small false eyespot near the tail, a classic bit of misdirection that likely confuses predators about which end is which. In the wild it ranges across an enormous stretch of the Indo-Pacific, from East Africa and the Red Sea all the way out to Hawaii and Easter Island, typically showing up on exposed seaward reefs though it also turns up in calmer lagoon environments. That long snout is a precision feeding tool, evolved to pluck tube feet from echinoderms, snatch polychaete tentacle tips, and pick off crustaceans from deep inside reef crevices. In the aquarium it adapts to a broader diet without too much fuss, which is part of why it does reasonably well in captivity compared to many other butterflies. It tends to be peaceful toward tankmates and is generally not a serious threat to most invertebrates. New keepers should know it has a reputation for being somewhat susceptible to marine ich, so stable water conditions and a good quarantine routine matter here.
