The saddleback butterflyfish (Chaetodon ephippium) is one of the larger and more visually dramatic members of the Chaetodontidae family, easily identified by the broad dark blotch draped across its upper rear body like a saddle. A marking so distinctive it makes this fish nearly unmistakable on the reef. The body itself is pale gray to yellowish with a orange-edged trailing fin, giving it a layered, almost painterly look. In the wild, it ranges widely across the Indo-Pacific, from Sri Lanka and the Cocos-Keeling Islands out to Hawaii and the Tuamotu archipelago, typically turning up on coral-rich lagoons and seaward reef slopes down to around 30 meters. Adults are often seen in pairs, which is pretty typical for the genus, while younger fish tend to be solitary and hang closer to shore. Its diet in the wild includes coral polyps, small invertebrates, filamentous algae, and fish eggs, which makes it a genuine challenge in captivity. Reef tanks are not a suitable home for this species. Feeding it well in an aquarium requires patience and variety. This is a rewarding fish for intermediate keepers who have done their homework, but it demands space, good water quality, and a thoughtful approach to nutrition.
