The dwarf zebra hermit crab (Calcinus laevimanus) is one of those small but genuinely useful additions to a reef tank. Native to a wide stretch of the Indo-Pacific, from East African coastlines all the way out to Hawaii, this species lives across a broad depth range in benthic habitats, picking over hard substrate for algae and organic debris. In the aquarium, that translates to a diligent grazer that works over rockwork, sand, and glass, making it a practical choice for controlling nuisance algae in smaller reef setups. The legs are patterned with alternating light and dark bands. That zebra-like coloration is what sets it apart from many of the other small hermit crabs that turn up in the trade. Adults stay compact, typically under an inch, so they are not going to bulldoze corals or harass fish the way some larger hermit species can. Temperament is genuinely peaceful, and they coexist well in community reef tanks alongside other invertebrates. As with any hermit crab, keeping a supply of empty shells in a range of sizes is good practice. They need to upgrade homes as they grow, and a crab stuck in a too-tight shell is a stressed one. A solid beginner-friendly invertebrate overall.
