Sexy Shrimp

Sexy shrimp (Thor amboinensis) earned their common name honestly. These small crustaceans constantly bob and wave their abdomens in a distinctive rocking motion that looks almost like a dance. Nobody is entirely sure why they do it, but it makes them one of the most immediately recognizable and entertaining invertebrates in a reef tank. Found across a broad range from the Indo-Pacific to the Atlantic, they typically live in close association with anemones, corals, and other cnidarians on shallow reefs and rubble zones, sheltering among the tentacles much like clownfish do with their host anemones. In the aquarium they are happiest when given a suitable host, a carpet anemone, hammer coral, or similar cnidarian, and will rarely stray far from it. They are naturally social and do well kept in small groups rather than as singletons. Despite being genuinely tiny, they are bold and visible, spending most of their time out in the open on their host rather than hiding. Their body is a warm brown-orange with bright white spots outlined in blue or purple, which makes them easy to spot even against busy reef backgrounds. Beginner-friendly by reef invertebrate standards, they are a genuinely rewarding addition to a nano reef or larger community system.
