The many-spined cowfish (Lactoria diaphana) is one of those fish that stops people mid-stride at the fish store. That rigid, boxlike body with prominent forehead horns makes it instantly recognizable as a member of the boxfish family. Adults develop a mottled, earth-toned pattern, but juveniles are a different story: they're semi-transparent and drift near the ocean surface in open water before settling down to a reef or sandy flat lifestyle. That early transparency is where the "transparent boxfish" nickname comes from. In the wild, this species turns up across a huge range. From the east coast of Africa all the way through the Indo-Pacific to Easter Island and Peru, which tells you something about how adaptable it is. It tends to hang around coral and rocky reefs, but it's just as comfortable cruising over sand and mudflats, picking at bottom-dwelling invertebrates. In the aquarium, the diet should reflect that carnivorous nature, with meaty foods offered regularly. Despite the beginner-friendly care rating, this fish needs serious space given how large it gets, and like other boxfish it can release toxins when severely stressed, so tankmate choices and stable conditions both matter.
