The Brown Butterflyfish (Chaetodon collare) is one of the more visually complex members of its family, with a rich brown body scaled in a fine reticulated pattern, a bold white bar crossing the face, and a vivid red tail that provides an unexpected contrast to the otherwise earthy tones. It's found across a broad Indo-West Pacific range, from the Persian Gulf and Maldives east to Japan, the Philippines, and Indonesia, where adults typically patrol reef edges and upper slopes, often moving in bonded pairs or loose aggregations. Juveniles are more commonly found in estuaries, a habitat shift that hints at just how adaptable the species is in the wild. But that flexibility doesn't always carry into the aquarium. This is where the Brown Butterflyfish earns its reputation as a challenge. Getting one to feed consistently after import is genuinely difficult, and many specimens are lost in the acclimation phase. In the wild it feeds heavily on coral polyps, which means recreating an acceptable substitute diet takes patience and persistence. A large, mature system with excellent water quality and a keeper willing to experiment with feeding approaches gives this fish its best chance. Definitely one for intermediate to experienced marine hobbyists rather than beginners.
