The double-saddled butterflyfish (Chaetodon falcula) is one of the more visually distinctive members of its family, wearing two dark saddle-shaped patches across the upper body against a pale yellow-white base. The face has the characteristic steep, pointed snout typical of butterflyfishes, which likely contributed to one of its older common names, pigface coralfish. In the wild it ranges across the Indian Ocean from the East African coast east toward Indonesia, where adults stake out reef edges and upper slopes. Particularly areas with consistent water movement. Juveniles tend to stay tucked among coral branches, but adults are more often seen in the open, usually paired up or in small loose groups. Their diet in the wild centers on invertebrates, so in an aquarium setting you can expect them to show interest in sessile invertebrates, which means they are generally not a safe choice for a mixed reef with corals or other delicate invertebrates. This species is the Indian Ocean counterpart to Chaetodon ulietensis, which fills a similar niche in the Pacific. For aquarium care, this is an intermediate-level fish. Not impossibly demanding, but it needs a spacious, well-established system and consistent water quality to thrive long-term.
