The powder blue tang (Acanthurus leucosternon) is one of those fish that stops people in their tracks at the fish store. That electric blue body, jet-black face mask, white belly, and bright yellow dorsal fin is a combination that's hard to forget. In the wild it ranges across the Indian Ocean from the eastern African coast out to the Andaman Sea and parts of Indonesia, living on shallow, clear coral reefs where it grazes constantly on benthic algae, sometimes alone and sometimes in surprisingly large feeding groups. In the aquarium that grazing behavior never really switches off. This fish is in constant motion, picking at live rock and covering every corner of the tank throughout the day. That restlessness is part of what makes it demanding: a cramped environment stresses it quickly, and a stressed powder blue is both more aggressive and more prone to illness, particularly ich, which seems to find this species almost irresistible. It's also territorial in a serious way, especially around its feeding areas, and it carries a razor-sharp spine at the base of its tail that it will use against tankmates and unwary hands alike. This is genuinely a fish for experienced keepers who can provide plenty of space, stable water quality, and a well-thought-out tankmate list.
