The dusky wrasse (Halichoeres marginatus) is one of those species that genuinely surprises people who only knew it from juvenile specimens. Young fish wear a fairly understated pattern, but as they mature through terminal phase, males develop a rich mosaic of greens, blues, and pinks that explains the alternate name splendid rainbow wrasse. Found across Indo-Pacific reefs, this is an active, constantly moving fish that spends its days picking across the substrate and rubble looking for small invertebrates. In the wild it tends to occupy shallower reef zones, and that energy translates directly into the aquarium. This is not a fish that sits still. Like other Halichoeres wrasses, it will bury itself in a sand bed when stressed or sleeping, so a decent sand layer is something you will want to plan for. It is generally considered reef-safe with caution, since it may pick at small ornamental shrimp or tiny crustaceans, but it tends to leave corals alone. This is a forgiving genus overall, but the dusky wrasse specifically benefits from an experienced keeper who can provide the space, tankmates, and setup it needs to settle in properly and display its best colors.
