The Grammistes Blenny (Meiacanthus grammistes) is one of the more fascinating small fish you can keep in a reef or fish-only setup, and its reputation comes down to one unusual feature: a pair of grooved fangs connected to venom glands in the lower jaw. This isn't just a defensive curiosity. It's so effective that at least one other blenny species, Petroscirtes breviceps, has evolved to mimic its appearance in the wild, gaining protection without the hardware. In nature, this species is found across the Western Pacific, from Indochina down to the Great Barrier Reef and northwestern Australia, typically in sheltered lagoon environments and on seaward reef faces. The body is pale with bold dark horizontal stripes, and there are several geographic color variations across its range. Despite the weaponry, it tends to be a relatively peaceful resident in the aquarium and is generally solitary, though wild individuals are occasionally seen loosely grouped with others of their kind. It's a mid-water swimmer compared to many blennies, spending less time perched on rockwork and more time actively moving through the water column. A 30-gallon tank can work, but more space is better. The venomous bite is a last resort, not an aggression strategy, so tank aggression toward other fish is minimal.
