Found across shallow reef flats and rocky inshore habitats of the West Indian Ocean, Atrosalarias fuscus fuscus is a blenny most recognizable by its deep, uniform dark coloration. Juveniles often show a rich brown that deepens toward near-black as the fish matures. It belongs to a group commonly called rockskippers or algae blennies, and the name fits: this fish spends most of its time grazing films of microalgae and diatoms from hard surfaces, making it a genuinely useful addition to a reef system with algae accumulation on the rockwork. Like most blennies, it is a bottom-hugger by nature, perching in crevices and favoring a tank that offers plenty of caves, ledges, and irregular surfaces to explore and rest on. It is generally peaceful toward fish of different species, but can show some territorial friction with others of its own kind or fish that share a similar body shape. Two of these in a small tank is usually asking for trouble unless the space is generous. Intermediate care is a fair rating. The fish is hardy once settled, but does need an established tank with a healthy algae crop or supplemental vegetable-based feeding to thrive long term.
