The Canary Blenny (Meiacanthus oualanensis) is a small, vividly yellow fish endemic to the waters around Fiji, where it inhabits shallow coastal areas. What sets this fish apart from most blennies you'll encounter in the hobby is that it belongs to the fangblenny group. Meaning it possesses functional venom-delivering fangs in its lower jaw. This isn't just a curiosity. Those fangs are a genuine defense mechanism, and any fishkeeper who reaches into the tank carelessly may find out the hard way. The bite isn't dangerous, but it's reportedly quite unpleasant, so mindfulness during maintenance is part of owning this species. In terms of temperament, the Canary Blenny runs semi-aggressive, and it may harass smaller or more passive tankmates, particularly fish it perceives as threats. Despite that edge to its personality, it's a rewarding fish to keep. Active, personable, and full of the quirky behavior that makes blennies so appealing. Like other fangblennies, it reproduces by laying adhesive eggs attached to a surface, with larvae eventually drifting as plankton before settling.
