The Nilgiri Mystus (Hemibagrus punctatus) is a large, rarely seen bagrid catfish native to the fast-flowing rivers and streams of the Cauvery drainage in southern India. It belongs to a small species group within Hemibagrus characterized by dark spots arranged in neat vertical columns along the flanks, and in life the fins carry a distinctly reddish or orange tint. An useful field mark that helps separate it from close relatives like H. menoda and H. peguensis. The head is broad, flat, and strongly depressed in the typical Hemibagrus fashion, giving the fish a no-nonsense, predatory silhouette. Like many members of the genus, it grows to a substantial size and is built to match the powerful currents of its natural habitat. In an aquarium context, the Nilgiri Mystus is not a fish for casual keepers. It is aggressively territorial and essentially incompatible with tankmates outside of very large, carefully managed systems. The sheer space requirement alone puts it out of reach for most home hobbyists. It appears in the trade only very rarely, and its wild population status is not well established. Breeding has not been documented in captivity. If you do encounter one, approach it as you would any large, predatory catfish. With realistic expectations and a very large tank.
